As far as I’m concerned, oysters are the saltwater loogie of the local waterways. Despite my distaste for them, many people feel otherwise and they’re a big part of the local fisherman’s economy; so much so that there’s an entire festival dedicated to the shapeless little beasts.
If you’re a bigger fan of water-loogies than I am, you may want to check out the St. Mary’s County Oyster Festival on October 15th-16th in Leonardtown, MD. I’ve never been to the event, but apparently it’s the home of the National Oyster Shucking Championship and the National Oyster Cook-off. The event runs from Sat: 10 AM – 6 PM. to Sun: 11 AM – 6 PM. Admission is $5 for anyone over 12, and parking is free. There’s also lots of entertainment scheduled, possibly including the Sam Grow Band on Saturday afternoon?
I still think they’re water loogies, though.
