If you’ve ever had a hankering to race your car on a track before, here’s your chance! The SCCA is holding an autocross event at Regency Furniture Stadium on July 10th, 2011! I’ve been to a few of their meets before, and the process to sign up is simple: Bring your car and a little bit of automotive racing enthusiasm!
What they do is set up a course in the parking lot with cones and time drivers through the improvised track, one car at a time. This is solo racing, so you’re not wheel to wheel with the other drivers, and you can typically register onsite and event rent a helmet for the day at the event!
The course is typically a minute long, and cars are separated in different classes based on the type of car and engine. It’s a great way to get your feet wet in auto racing and even just watch other drivers try to maneuver the course! The event runs from 8am to 4pm, so be prepared for a long day if you plan to participate! For more information, check out their website.
The Sports Car Club of America is one of the country’s largest amateur and professional motor sports organizations. Activities range from racing and rallying to socializing. SCCA is the official sanctioning body of such professional road racing events and series as the Daytona 24 Hour, the Trans Am, World Challenge, PRO Rally, Solo II National Tour and Pro Solo Championship. The SCCA web site contains plenty of information telling how you can get involved.
