Day 126: Piney Point Lighthouse Waterfront Celebration May 14th-15th

The St. Mary’s County Museum Division will host the annual Piney Point Lighthouse Waterfront Celebration on Saturday, May 14 and Sunday, May 15, 2011 at the Piney Point Lighthouse, Museum and Historic Park in Piney Point, MD. Event hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free.

The “Outdoor Adventures” theme incorporates learning more about recreational activities everyone can enjoy from gardening to kayaking to charter fishing and bow hunting, and more! There will be kayak demos by staff from Bluhaven Piers and segway demos by National Harbor Segways. Learn about bicycling from Patuxent Adventure Center, ecological landscaping and green gardening, and a fun walk along Lighthouse Road at 3 p.m. both days!

Other highlights include lighthouse and museum tours, children’s crafts and face painting, and delicious grilled food by Smokin’ Joes for a riverside picnic! Don’t miss the art show with participants from King’s Christian Academy, Little Flower Catholic School, and Piney Point Elementary. Meet representatives from other lighthouses and Recreation and Parks staff with information about recreation programs and the progress of the Three Notch Trail.

The Piney Point Lighthouse, Museum and Historic Park implemented major site enhancements in 2010 to include new parking areas, landscaping, boardwalk, kayak launch and exhibit. The public is invited to view and enjoy the new look and new amenities now available. The Potomac River Maritime Exhibit houses a collection of historic wooden work boats and state-of-the art exhibits that illustrate the history and culture of local watermen. The museum has upgraded exhibits and the Lighthouse Lens Museum Store is stocked with unique and interesting gift items and souvenirs. Museum members receive a discount!

The Piney Point Lighthouse, Museum and Historic Park is open daily for the summer season 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through the end of October. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for senior citizens and military, $1.50 for students, and kids 5 and under are free. The park area is handicap accessible and is open 7 days a week, sunrise to sunset.
