The Patuxent River Sail and Power Squadron now is offering its boating classes to nonmembers. This is good news for boaters who want to increase their knowledge and skill at boat maintenance and operation, navigation and weather. Classes are offered in the evening, and occasionally on weekends, so that boaters who work can attend.
Classes take place on a rotating basis and over a two-year period will usually include boating, seamanship, piloting, advanced piloting, junior navigation, navigation, cruise planning, engine maintenance, marine electronics, sail, weather and 18 shorter seminars on such topics as advanced powerboat handling, hurricanes and boats and marine radar. There is usually a modest fee for the classes, which includes the text.
Two classes will begin in February: Piloting will begin at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 8 at the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center; a class on weather will begin at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 9 at the same location.
