If you haven’t noticed yet, I’m a big fan of supporting local businesses. When Keith Grasso, owner of Island Music Company, first started his venture, he was working out of a ridiculously tiny storefront in La Plata, MD. Now, with a significantly larger store, IMC is doing well, offering musical instruments, lessons, accessories, the whole 9 yards.
Here’s the difference between Keith’s shop and a place like guitar center: When I walk in to Island Music Company, the store owner is the man behind the counter, not a kid making minimum wage who hates their job. If I want apathetic sales people, I’ll go to the big chain stores.
Island Music Company also boasts a fascinating collection of guitars and basses. The photo to the right is of a 4 string guitar, built by the shop’s guitar repair tech as a hobby. He used cigar boxes recycled from the local cigar shop in Waldorf. It’s interesting little pieces like this that make up the character of this shop, combined with the encyclopedic knowledge of both music and the store stock that keep me coming back to Island Music Company.
